Save the Date 2026

7.6.–27.9.2026

From 7 June to 27 September 2026, the fourth edition of the BIENNALE BREGAGLIA invites visitors to discover the valley through the theme of the exhibition, «Transito»: from Maloja via Alp Cavloc, Casaccia, Borgonovo, Stampa and Promontogno to the national border at Castasegna, visitors can retrace the ancient connecting routes.

«Transit» has multiple meanings: it may imply physical movement from one place to another as well as a process of substantial change between one or more states. It includes objects, goods, planets, territories and people in relation to the dimensions of time and space.

Travelling is an active condition linked to necessity, expansionism, or spiritual quest, visible in various forms and historical phases: in political expansion, from the Roman Empire to the definition of borders in the modern era; for commercial purposes, with smuggling; in search of experience, in Grand Tours, in mountaineering, and in the schizophrenic tourism of today. But it also implies an exchange of skills and resources, for example in transhumance (the movement of livestock to and from high pastureland) or modern commuting.

Being a transit zone, on the other hand, is a passive condition, where it is necessary to learn to welcome and connect cultural, landscape, and linguistic identities that are otherwise distant, such as those of the Mediterranean and Switzerland. This ambivalence offers the richness of being able to share services, labour, goods, and heritage thanks to a community capable of redefining itself in relation to more or less tangible concepts such as territory, belonging, and «elsewhere».

The artists were asked to reflect on all these themes, deepening their personal research in relation to the symbolic places of «Transit» in Val Bregaglia and beyond.

The ceremonial opening with official speeches and program will take place on Saturday, 6 June 2026.

In collaboration with Soglio Produkte AG and inspired by the 2024-theme «Architecture and Gardens» we created a room fragrance called "Stüa". The woody note with light, fresh floral accents is reminiscent of forests, wild meadows and gardens as well as the typical wooden parlours of Bregaglia – the «Stüa». This product is available from retailers or directly through the online shop of Soglio Produkte AG (CHF 19).

The proceeds from this product go to the association Progetti d’arte in Val Bregaglia, to support the realization of future art projects within the Valley.
